In 2020, PEF and other state unions reached an agreement with the Office of Employee Relations (OER) that allowed members to carry over vacation accruals beyond the contractual cap. The agreement was extended in 2021 and 2022. This extension was also offered to Management Confidential (M/C) employees. The agreement requires that accruals carried over must now be used by Dec. 31, 2022.
Vacation accruals that were carried over either from April 2020, April 2021 or April 2022 must be used by the end of this year to avoid forfeiture. Non-carried-over vacation accruals earned after April 1, 2022, can exceed the 40- or 50-day contractual cap until April 1, 2023, when any such accruals exceeding 40 days will be forfeited in the absence of an additional carry-over agreement.
If you have carried-over vacation time that you have not put in for and will lose by year’s end, please do yourself a favor and make plans to use that time now. PEF can fight for you if management denies your vacation requests, but it’s much easier if you have a paper trail. This is time you earned and time you should take. Not taking the time off is equivalent to giving money back to the State.
If you have any questions about the balance of your accruals, contact your HR or personnel office. If you have any questions about the expiration dates that apply to those accruals, please reach out to your PEF Field Representative.
