The Munchausen by Proxy and Medical Child Abuse virtual training, from 1-4 p.m. on Sept. 21, 2022, provides guidance to clinicians for identifying, investigating, and managing Munchausen by Proxy, also known as Medical Child Abuse, Factitious Disorder Imposed on Another, Caregiver Fabricated Illness in a Child, and Abuse by Pediatric Condition Falsification.
This type of child abuse is potentially lethal yet remains under-recognized. New “Munchausen by Proxy Guidelines for Practice,” published by the American Professional Society on the Abuse of Children (APSAC), will be provided to participants and used to illustrate effective interventions in cases of MBP, fabricated illness in a child, and Medical Child Abuse.
Differential diagnoses of Factitious Disorder Imposed on Another, Malingering, Hypochondriasis, Somatization Disorder, and delusional disorders will be covered, along with DSM-V and ICD-10 language for coding this type of maltreatment. Case studies of both successful, and mis-managed child protective services investigations are detailed, as well as long term outcomes regarding placement, reunification, therapy, and foster care.
